Boone business hit in bill scam
Deputies are warning business owners in Boone County to be aware of a scam involving a phony utility bill.
Two businesses already have been scammed out of hundreds of dollars, Boone Chief Deputy Chad Barker said. He said both businesses received a call from a person they believed worked for Appalachian Power.
The person told the businesses they had not received payment on their accounts and asked them to make a payment over the phone.
One business paid $1,500 while the other paid $500.
Barker said neither business owed on its account and that they'd been scammed.
One way to protect against such a scam is to contact the utility before making any payments and verify your account information and standing. Barker said if a person feels that they have been the victim of such a scam or has received one of these calls, they may contact the Boone Sheriff's Department at 304-369-7340.
