54 W.Va. sex offenders found out of compliance
BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) - Fifty-four people have been arrested as part of a four-day sweep to ensure that sex offenders in southern West Virginia are complying with registration laws.
Federal and state officials announced results of the initiative at a news conference Friday in Beckley. They said officers checked on 317 sex offenders in Mercer, McDowell, Monroe, Summers and Wyoming counties last Monday through Thursday. About one in six were found to be out of compliance with the registration law.
In August, a similar operation in Boone, Lincoln and Logan counties found 10 of 209 sex offenders out of compliance. And in December of last year, a check of nearly 300 sex offenders in Cabell, Mingo and Wayne counties resulted in 18 arrests.
