CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Kanawha prosecutors will determine whether to pursue criminal charges in the shooting death of a 10-year-old girl, deputies said.
A 10-year-old girl who suffered a gunshot to the arm and chest Sunday evening died overnight at Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital, Cpl. Brian Humphreys, a spokesman for the Kanawha Sheriff's Office, said Monday.
The girl, whose name has not been released, was practicing shooting a 410 shotgun at targets with a 9-year-old boy Sunday evening near a creek on Pentacre Road near Quick. The two were friends and were at the home of one of the boy's relatives, deputies said.
The girl was shot during target practice and taken to meet a county ambulance, which then rushed her to CAMC General, where she underwent surgery upon arrival but later died.
Detectives were continuing their investigation Monday, Humphreys said, but would present their completed evidence, statements and reports to the Kanawha County Prosecutor's Office for review."That office will determine whether or not to pursue criminal charges in the matter," Humphreys said. "The shooting is still viewed as an accidental event."
