CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A Charleston man was hospitalized after being shot in the chest during a drug deal gone bad in the East End, police say.
James Stewart, 55, let Isaiah White, 27 and Shawn Lane, 25, both of Charleston, into his apartment at 303 Ruffner Ave. just before 3:30 a.m. Sunday with intentions of selling them Xanax pills, said Sgt. Tony Hazelett, assistant chief of detectives.
The three used pills together before the deal was to go down, but once White and Lane started planning to rob Stewart once they saw the amount of drugs he had in his possession, Hazelett said.
Either White or Lane pulled a gun on Stewart and fired one shot at him, striking him in the chest. Hazelett said Stewart was wounded just inches below his heart.
Stewart was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital where he underwent surgery. He was in serious condition at the hospital as of Sunday afternoon.
White and Lane were arrested Sunday morning and charged with malicious wounding and first-degree robbery. Both are being held at South Central Regional Jail on $100,000 bond each.
